DID YOU KNOW? UIF FACTS EVERY EMPLOYEE SHOULD UNDERSTAND (SOUTH AFRICA)
Author: Julandie Swart (UIF Specialists)
Many UIF claim problems happen because people don’t understand who is responsible for what.
THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR CANNOT REGISTER AN EMPLOYEE
It is the employer’s responsibility to:
- Register employees for UIF
- Submit correct employee information
- Submit declarations
Refusing to register an employee for UIF is a punishable offence.
If this is not done correctly, your UIF claim may be delayed or rejected.
THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR CANNOT CHANGE A UI-19
- The UI-19 belongs to the employer
- Only the employer can correct or resubmit it
Misrepresentations on a UI-19 carry serious consequences and penalties.
If there are errors on the UI-19, the employer must fix them.
THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR CANNOT CHANGE EMPLOYER INFORMATION
The Department of Labour cannot:
- Change salaries
- Change employer details
- Interfere with what was submitted by the employer
This includes:
- UI-19
- Salary Schedule
- Employer declarations
Only the employer can correct this information.
WHAT THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR CAN DO
The Department of Labour can assist with:
- Updating employee records
- Processing corrected declarations once submitted
- Assisting based on the information provided
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOUR UIF CLAIM
If your UIF claim is:
- Rejected
- Stuck in “submitted”
- Delayed
It is often because:
- Employer information is incorrect
- Declarations are missing or incorrect
- The UI-19 or Salary Schedule has errors
FINAL
Understanding responsibility is key.
- The employer must correct and submit accurate information
- The Department of Labour works with what is submitted
If the information is incorrect, your UIF claim cannot be processed correctly.
Knowledge is power.
