As the year comes to a close, it’s essential to reflect on the highs and lows we've experienced with UFiling. This year has been a rollercoaster, highlighting significant challenges and invaluable lessons learned along the way.

The Low: A Month of Uncertainty

One of the most challenging periods occurred in August when UFiling went offline due to ongoing disputes between the new and old service vendors. This shutdown left many users in a state of uncertainty for five long weeks. During this time, Julandie Scholtz Swart, who also manages UIF Help and Advice South Africa, took the initiative to leverage social media. Her efforts aimed to raise awareness about the struggles posed by the shutdown of the UFiling and USSD systems.

Through relentless campaigning, Julandie and her team highlighted the frustration faced by countless individuals reliant on these services. Their determination not only kept the conversation alive but also showcased the power of community advocacy in times of crisis.

The High: A Moment of Recognition

The tide began to turn when our social media efforts caught the attention of News24.

Julandie was interviewed, bringing further visibility to the ongoing issues surrounding UFiling. This recognition was a pivotal moment, underscoring the importance of persistence and collective action in the face of adversity.

Despite the challenges, the moment served as a reminder that our voices matter. By sharing our experiences and raising awareness, we can create ripples of change in the systems that govern us.

Lessons Learned: The Power of Proactivity

This year has taught us a crucial lesson: we have two choices in the face of adversity. We can either choose to be proactive in seeking change or simply vent our frustrations without resolution. The former has proven to be far more effective.

We’ve learned that it’s essential to engage actively with the issues at hand. Each step we take towards raising awareness about the corruption and inefficiencies within the Department of Labour is a step towards meaningful change.

Moving Forward: A Call to Action

While we’ve overcome many obstacles this year, our work is far from done. We need to continue advocating for change, one day at a time. It’s vital to bring awareness to the obstacles we face when reporting corruption within the Department of Labour.

The department must recognize that they need the public more than we need them. We are their eyes and ears, and it’s time for them to start listening.

Let’s carry the lessons of this year into the next. Together, we can make a difference. It starts with you and me, and with each voice raised, we move closer to the change we seek.
